Introduction

We are pleased to exhibit Peggi Kroll Roberts’ richly executed, expressive light-filled paintings pertaining to her life in California. Peggi is originally from Canton, Ohio and later moved to Arizona where she studied art at Arizona State University and then at the Art Center College of Design in California.

Her work is a personal distillation of the warm, palpable light and animated brushwork of such historic Impressionists as Edward Potthast and Joaquin Sorolla and the painterly, abstracted expressive forms of such artists as David Park and Richard Diebenkorn of the California Abstract Expressionist school of figurative painting in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Peggi’s orchestration of dense, tactile richly-brushed surfaces, in effect, makes the painting process the true subject of her art. However, she simultaneously is able to capture the fleeting light and atmospheric conditions of a particular place at a specific time of day with uncanny accuracy.

Jim and I hope that you enjoy her works as much as we do.

Artist's Statement

I’ve painted many studies from life to capture real color and value relationships. When I supplement my information with photography it’s for drawing reference. To capture real color and value there is no substitute for painting from life. . . .

Painting from life, it can be hard to make a painting out of the mayhem happening in front of me. I have to be intuitive and let it be.
