Artist's Statement:
|
A painting can be a simple meditation on being. I believe art can render the world visible and that a painting can make seen that which is known but not otherwise visible. I take simple forms, light, color, and three-dimensional elements and bring them together in an attempt to create a phenomenal occurrence, which may, coincidentally, suggest complex issues and metaphors.
I like the idea of drawing the viewer in gently with openness and simplicity and keeping him there to contemplate the small subtleties and complexities he may find. I want my paintings to be restrained and pristine, yet at the same time warm, sensuous and inviting. In a way I'd like the work to resist interpretation. Instead I'd like the reaction to be more of a non-verbal knowing that can't be put into words.

"She manipulates her colors so that the final product radiates light and tantalizes the eye, often pulling the viewer beyond the painted surface and into some indefinite space." |

Betsy DeFusco's ethereal, spiritually imbued paintings and works on paper continue to evolve in inviting and challenging new ways. She has begun to introduce more calligraphic references in her abstracted works, which provide more personal notations from the artist's life and, also, further pictorially animate the luminous nuances of color and tone for which she is well recognized.
